The Answer to How One Behaves is Beneath the Iceberg

Have you ever asked yourself what drives behaviour? Why do people act in different ways?

Chances are you will often find yourself in a situation where someone else’s behaviour seems strange and inappropriate to you but you cannot discover why.

The answer is to dig deeper - Apparently it is all about what is under the iceberg! It is people’s beliefs that drive behaviour. But external influences are also important.

Listen to the podcast to find out how to look beneath the iceberg.

Is The Dark-Side Destroying Your Business?

If you run a business you can probably put your people into one of 3 categories according to how they work and their team skills:

  • Luke SkyWalkers
  • Followers
  • Dark Side

First, the ‘Luke Skywalkers’ of this world. These are the people who will never let you down and strive to achieve great things, whatever is thrown at them (You probably have a few of these in your organisation).

At the other end of the scale, you have those people who primarily like to moan a lot and drag everyone around them down in the process. We’ll call these people ‘The Dark Side’ (You probably have more of these).

The Lukes are immune to the Dark Side – they will not enter the Dark Side and will not be influenced by those on the Dark Side. However, the middle group, well, that’s a different story.

The middle group of people usually contains the majority. We’ll call them the ‘Followers’. The quality of their output will often depend on how much they are influenced by each of the other groups. If they’re with the Lukes, all will be well. But once the Dark-Siders get hold of them though, with their talk of the credit crunch, recession, cut-backs and redundancies….you have no hope of getting much work done. more…

Effective Communication

I hope you enjoyed the Podcast. As promised please find some back up notes as indicated in the podcast around the 38% part of communication.

How we communicate

For me Dr Birdwhistle started this whole link between the words , how we say things and our Body language….. Also and probably most importantly he has a cooler name than all the others!

The years of research suggest that when we communicate the link between the words, how we say things and what we don’t say is 7%, 38%, 55%.

Communication exercise - great icebreaker

Apparently as a human being you can take in two million bits of information per second…. it seems the majority of this information is dealt with by our sub conscious.

Consciously we can deal with about 7 chunks of information… when you give out your phone number you usually break it down into two or three segments…. why… because we cant cope with things above 7.

So your sub conscious has great control on how you act, communicate, think…. live your lives… think about it you don’t notice the fact you are breathing… you do this unconsciously… you would want to breathe consciously… you would be knackered! more…

Coaching

Being an effective coach can have an astonishing impact on the people you work with. Trust me the personal rewards you get are out of this world.

Below are some notes to support the audio you have just listened to.

In summary

  • Questioning & Listening skills
  • Example questions to use in your coaching sequence

Which way do you eat your banana?

Apparently, as a human being, you have 60,000 thoughts a day; 90% are the same ones you had yesterday, and the day before, and the day before.

We tend to live out our lives ticking to an habitual beat. Sometimes you just need to ask yourself “which way do i eat my banana?”

Who Controls Your Thinking?

What is it that makes the successful, successful… Is it education, good looks, luck, length of service? Have a look around at the people you class as successful (if you feel successful look in the mirror). Are they better looking, educated to a higher standard, had a lucky break or just been there forever?… Probably not!
